Stožec mountain (1,065 m) looms above the village of the same name about 6 km south-west of the town Volary in the National Park Šumava (Bohemian Forest).

The granite mountain with mixed forests are protected in the nature reserve. The original primeval forest called Medvědice (13 ha), which lies on the south-eastern hillside, is protected as well. Below the top there is a rocky massif called Stožecká Skála (Stožec Rock) with a small sea of stones. The iron cross with ruins of a small castle from the 13th century can be found on the top of the rock. It was the last known natural habitat of falcons in South Bohemia.
The peak of the mountain offers a nice view of the valley of the Studená Vltava (Cold Vltava), mountains Plechý, Boubín and Třístoličník and of the town Volary.

Below the rock there is a rare wooden Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the end of the 18th century. It was built near the spring of healing water. After the Second World War the forbidden border area was here and the chapel dilapidated. The authentic copy was built in the near village Philippsreut in Bavaria (Germany) in 1985. The chapel on the mountain was reconstructed at the end of the 1980's and it became a pilgrimage place.

Access to Stožecká Skála and to the chapel is possible along the blue marked trail from the village České Žleby (about 5 km), along the yellow one, which joins the blue sign, from the village Stožec (about 5 km) or along the blue marked path from the road Stožec - Černý Kříž (Nová Pec) about 2 km behind Stožec (3 km).
At the crossroad called Pod Stožeckou Skálou ("Below the Stožec Rock") begins the path of the instructional trail Na Stožeckou Skálu ("Up to the Stožec Rock").
