The holiday centre Modrava lies about 20 km west of the town Vimperk in the valley around the confluence of the Modravský Potok (Modrava Stream), Roklanský Potok (Roklan Stream) and Filipohuťský Potok (Filipova Huť Stream), 980 m a.s.l.

It was originally a settlement of timbermen, which was founded in 1737. In the 18th century cutting wood started here and the Vchynicko-Tetovský Kanál (Vchynice-Tetov Canal), which runs from the Vydra river near the village, was built for floating timber here.

There are large marshlands are around Modrava - Mlynářská Slať (Mill Fen), Rokytská Slať (Rokyta Fen) etc. Their common name is Modravské Slatě (Modrava Fens) and they comprise the largest nature reserve (3,615 ha) of the National Park Šumava (Bohemian Forest). This area is one of the best preserved Mesozoic areas in Central Europe.

Modrava is a well-known starting point of trips into central Šumava mountains.
