During the existence of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (in the Second World War) at the turn of 1942 several groups of parachutists from England landed here and some of them found the haven in Bernartice. The Gestapo (secret police in Nazi Germany) attacked the town on the 10th June 1942 and a lot of citizens were executed or deported into the death camps.
On the last day of the war the group of volunteers and citizens of Bernartice fought against the police of Nazi Germany (SS) on the small hill Na Posvátném (the Holy Hill). The monument situated on the hill commemorates this event.
